This is what Google Map does to me. Sends me curious about certain streets and areas that I wouldn't normally go to but are actually really close by, and due to an act of serendipity I find all these cool places and shortcuts. Well, longcuts actually. I went and investigated this street that I'd always been curious about and it turned out that it goes through a residential area deep in the forest and the street gets narrower and narrower as it carved on the side of the mountain. The end point actually leads you straight to the parking lot of the provincial park. It was fun, I was pretending to be a rally driver the entire time hahaha! At some point I was starting to worry that the road would become smaller and smaller to a point that should I reach a dead end, I wouldn't be able to make a u-turn. But I had confidence on my hunch on where it would lead and I hypothesized that it would lead back to the main highway at some point. And it did. The kids were with their grandma...

This is such a long overdue update but it doesn't matter because this trip definitely deserves to be featured. One Sunday in February I decided that I was going to go all the way to Vancouver via public transportation, alone, so I can experience the olympic excitement first hand. I'm not a big sports person, as everyone knows, but such an event like this is a big deal and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity that it's happening this close to where I am, and my brain just can't process the idea that I wouldn't even at least try to go and experience it. I was shocked that Eduardo has never even shown any interest that it's happening in Bristish Columbia. Up until a week before the Olympic opening I asked him again if he was sure that we weren't even going to try to go to Vancouver, and he just shrugged it off. I understand that his concern is the financial considerations. That it's too costly for all of us to go and even more expensive to get ticket...

I've always wanted to bake from scratch. I've tried using the mix and the prepared frosting that you can buy from the store. And although that technique has worked perfectly over the years, the cake always ends up tasting the same thing because there's only a couple of brands of frosting you can choose from. Also I tried baking from scratch before but it must've been a weird pregnancy craving and the only recipe I could find for this particular craving was some random one from someone's random cooking blog. So it wasn't exactly the most reliable source and in short, it ended up as this big eggy disaster. Anyway I decided that once and for all I will get this task out of my system and prove to myself that one, I'm not a baking idiot and that trial run before was the recipe's fault and not me. It took me a while to develop my resolutions for this year. Some of last year's will still be on my list for this year as I either didn't get to do them or I didn't feel like I did a good job and would like to take another stab at it. But for my new ones, some are simple and self-explanatory, but there are others that actually took a bit of reflection to decide which ones I would like to commit myself to accomplish this year. 1. I'm going to hike for 25 km. Last year I said I was just going to hike and I did hike with the kids but even though technically it was a hiking activity, it wasn't really a serious hike. So I thought I'd add a little mileage into the mix, see where that takes me. 2. I'm going to bake a cake from scratch. FROM SCRATCH. The last time I baked from scratch it was a terrible disaster. Ok, ok, I've been bad with updating this blog, but I have really good excuses. A number of really good excuses. I returned to work in September so gone were the random chunks of time that I could sneak some writing into my day. My mom stayed with us for three months so with her and the kids around all the time, there was never really any quiet time to just sit and write. We also moved to the suburbs and so I have to factor in commute into my schedule, not to mention the major adjustment on my energy level coming from my five minute walk home to an hour's commute everyday. I actually have more excuses, but I think these few example are kind of enough to paint a general picture. Moving on, I know it's late to be posting this but I finally have time to sit down and reflect on the past year, so I should take the opportunity to do my review so I also get some sense on how I want to look forward to this current year.
